What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar, also known as ACV, is a type of vinegar made from crushed fermented apples, sugar, and yeast through a process known as fermentation.

To begin, the apples are crushed and combined with sugar and yeast to speed up their fermentation process. As a result, the sugar converts into alcohol after a couple of weeks.

Then, the alcohol is broken down by natural bacteria and turns into acetic acid. This is what creates the tangy flavor and pungent smell ACV is known for.

Pineapple Shrub Detox co*cktail with Apple Cider Vinegar

Dismiss any thoughts of green bushes – this is a shrub recipe. Entirely different.

Very popular in colonial America, shrub drinks are a type of drinking vinegar with three basic components- sugar, vinegar and fruit. The shrub co*cktail is a light, refreshing drink that’s perfect for summer.

The syrup served as the base for a drink that was topped with water, club soda or ginger ale. The tangy syrup also serves as a base for co*cktails.

Shrubs are perfect for nearly any fruit, especially berries, citrus and stone fruits. This recipe features pineapple for a summery splash of taste!

Ingredients

  • Pineapple (Fresh Fruit or Juice)– Look for canned pineapple chunks without added sugar, or chop fresh pineapple into pieces. Alternatively, you can use pineapple juice instead.
  • Raw Honey – This acts as a natural sweetener and cuts some of the tang of apple cider vinegar. Pure maple syrup will also work.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – Look for organic, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the mother like Bragg ACV. There should be no additives or sweeteners on the ingredient list!
  • Mint – Use fresh mint leaves to add bright, refreshing notes to the drink.
  • Spices – Cayenne pepper and ground turmeric add savory notes and a kick of heat.
  • Grated Ginger – Use freshly grated ginger, not ground ginger, for the best results.
  • Lime Juice – Freshly squeezed is best!
  • Sparkling Water – Use as little or as much as you like.

Note: Feel free to experiment with different ingredients and combinations to create new flavors for your ACV drink! Some popular additions include fresh ginger, cinnamon sticks, and/or lemon juice.

Medicinal Benefits of This Detox Morning co*cktail

Instructions

  1. Combine the ingredients. Combine all the ingredients in a blender. Or, if you’re using pineapple juice, whisk or shake them together to create a concentrate or base for the drink, kind of like a co*cktail mixer.

Pro-Tip: Adjust the ingredients to taste. For example, for extra spice, you can add more cayenne. Or, for more zest or tang, add an extra splash of apple cider vinegar, mint, and lime.

  1. Create your co*cktail. Pour part of the concentrate into a glass, add sparkling water to taste, and give your apple cider vinegar detox drink a stir. Then, garnish with lime and mint, and enjoy! If you prefer a super strong drink, you can drink the concentrate as it is without adding sparkling water.

co*cktail Option: Turn this easy apple cider vinegar drink recipe into an evening co*cktail by stirring in a splash of tequila or rum along with the sparkling water!

Can I Make This Recipe Ahead of Time?

Yes! Once combined, the drink concentrate can be transferred to an airtight container and stored in the refrigerator for up to six weeks.

I haven’t tried keeping it out of fridge due to the pineapple juice, but you could be right! Let me know if you try it!

I just made it last night.
I used fresh pineapple with no added juice. I’ve read so many recipes and facts about shrubs that say they could last over a year unrefrigerated. Then I’ve read the opposite.
Being that they didn’t have refrigerators in colonial America I’m thinking the first is true.
Although they may have consumed it within a few days back then.

That’s very true! How did it taste after making it? Are you going to keep it out or put in fridge?

it’s been setting for almost 3 days on the counter. I tasted it yesterday and it’s really good. sometime around the 4th day I’ll strain it and put it in 8oz bottles. I’m a vendor at the local farmers market.
I’m gonna check the pH after I strain it. If it’s below 4 it should be stable.

What a horrific post on touting apple cider vinegar as beneficial in this concoction. I think these older comments are fake or posted by mentally deficient people.

So sorry you feel that way. That was definitely not my intention. Sure, there is a co*cktail option but the real focus in on the morning mocktail. And i’m not sure who Joe exotic is. LOL probably best I don’t know. Please be kind when leaving comments. Constructive criticism is welcome, but please be don’t criticize others in your comments.

I use anywhere between 2-3 ounces and then add sparkling water or kombucha, etc. Splash of tequila if you want it a co*cktail. Taste and see how strong the 2 ounces is to your liking, then adjust from there. Does that make sense?

Does this mixture go bad in the fridge? I am mixing it every morning and every night. Never thought of keeping it all mixed up for days like an elexir. Would you suggest me to do it? Please and thank you ?

Hi Rix! Shrub syrup can be made in a big batch and kept in the refrigerator for six to eight weeks. Take out what you will need for the single serving and tightly close it again. 🙂

Thank you for your response. I have another question: what happens to the mother inside the ACV when in a large storage mixture? Then I want to add that I uses cinnamon and garlic and blackpepper for extra taste and I use it in hot water.

I absolutely love this drink. First time I made it was on a lark. 2nd time I was on a mission. I enjoy the cayenne bite in the back of my throat. I like the mixture of fruit juices. I subbed orange juice because no grapefruit juice. The fizzy water makes it seem mimosa-ish. Can’t wait for my 27 year old daughter to try it. So fancy without trying!
