Brazilian authorities bury deceased migrants who drifted in African boat to the Amazon (2)

BELEM, Brazil (AP) — The bodies of nine migrants found on an African boat off the northern coast of Brazil’s Amazon region were buried Thursday with a solemn ceremony in the Para state capital of Belem.

Fishermen off the coast of Para found the boat adrift on April 13, carrying the bodies that were already decomposing. Brazilian officials later said documents found in the vessel indicated the victims were migrants from Mali and Mauritania, and that the boat had departed the latter country after Jan. 17.

Paris has a new king of the crusty baguette. Baker Xavier Netry was chosen this week as the 31st winner of Paris’ annual “Grand Prix de la baguette” prize. His long loaf beat 172 others. The competing baguettes were evaluated for taste, look, texture, airiness and the quality of the baking. The jury included a deputy mayor, industry representatives, journalists and six Parisians that City Hall said were drawn at random. The Utopie bakery in Paris’ 11th district that Netry works for wins 4,000 euros ($4,290) and becomes one of the suppliers of the presidential Elysee Palace for a year.

Man convicted of involuntary manslaughter in father's drowning, told police he was baptizing him

  • AP

A Massachusetts man who told police he was exorcising a demon and performing a baptism when he shoved his father’s head under water multiple times has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter in his death. A jury found 22-year-old Jack Callahan guilty on Thursday. He's scheduled to be sentenced on May 3. In June 2021, investigators said the younger man was at first trying to help his father, who had left a center where he was being treated for alcohol abuse. Prosecutors said they took a ride-share vehicle from Boston to a Duxbury pond and began fighting. Police later found the father submerged in the pond. Jack Callahan's lawyer said the state didn’t have enough evidence to convict him.

A Russian journalist has been detained for posts criticizing the military, his lawyer says

  • AP

A journalist for the Russian edition of Forbes magazine has been detained on charges of spreading false information about the Russian military. Sergei Mingazov's lawyer said on Facebook Friday that the journalist is being held in the Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk. The lawyer said that Mingazov was detained because of social media posts he made about the Ukrainian city of Bucha. More than 400 bodies of civilians were found in Bucha. Many of them bore signs of torture after Russian forces pulled out in April 2022. Mingazov will appear in court on Saturday on the charge of spreading false information. That could send him to prison for 10 years if he's convicted.

Five surprise teams aim to finish stunning seasons by securing Champions League spot

  • By GRAHAM DUNBAR - AP Sports Writer

There could be a surprising team from each of Europe’s “big five” leagues when the new-look Champions League debuts next season. Aston Villa, Bologna, Brest, Girona and Stuttgart are all on course to qualify for Europe’s elite competition going into the final few rounds of their national league. Bologna, Stuttgart and Girona have perhaps the best chance of earning a place in the 36-team Champions League lineup when the lucrative tournament switches to a new format next season. Spain’s Girona and French club Brest have never played in any European competition. But this kind of challenge was not expected from any of the provincial teams, which have had little or no recent success.

Ukraine's farm minister is the latest corruption suspect as Kyiv aims to undo recent Russian gains

  • By ILLIA NOVIKOV - Associated Press

A Ukrainian court has ordered the detention of the country’s farm minister in the latest high-profile corruption investigation. The minister is suspected of unlawfully obtaining valuable land. Officials said he was released after paying bail. Ukraine is trying to root out corruption that has long dogged the country. Also Friday, Kyiv security officials were assessing how they can recover lost battlefield momentum in the war. Russia, despite sustaining high losses, has been taking control of small settlements as part of its effort to drive deeper into eastern Ukraine. Military analysts say it’s been slow going for the Kremlin’s troops in eastern Ukraine and is likely to stay that way, but the key hilltop town of Chasiv Yar is vulnerable to the Russian onslaught.

Under-pressure Scottish leader cancels major speech as confidence vote in his government looms

  • By PAN PYLAS - Associated Press

Scotland’s leader has cancelled a speech as he fights for his political life in the wake of his decision to pull the plug on a three-year power-sharing agreement. First Minister Humza Yousaf of the Scottish National Party cancelled Friday's speech following his decision to tear up the power-sharing deal with the much smaller Greens. Without the support of the Greens, the SNP is two votes shy of a majority in the Scottish Parliament. Scottish Labour said it will lodge a vote of no confidence in the Scottish government next week. If the government loses the vote, then it would be forced to resign and early elections could be on the cards.

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in New York's special congressional election

  • By LEAH ASKARINAM - Associated Press

New York voters are choosing a replacement for Democrat Brian Higgins in a congressional district where Democrats have a long record of success. Higgins cited the “slow and frustrating” pace of Congress before resigning in February. Local party officials handpicked the nominees for Tuesday's special election. Democrats chose Buffalo state Sen. Tim Kennedy. Republicans nominated West Seneca Town Supervisor Gary Dickson. A Democratic victory would shrink Republicans’ six-seat majority by one member but not necessarily for long. Three special elections in previously Republican-held districts are on the calendar before the end of June.

The report, which was presented to the government on Friday, said that membership in the military alliance and the serious security situation require higher ambitions. The report was penned by the Defense Committee which was made up of representatives of the eight political parties in the Swedish parliament, the Riksdag. The center-right, three-party coalition of Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is likely to follow the its recommendations.

Chelsea and Lyon bring leads into return legs of Women's Champions League semifinals

Egypt sends delegation to Israel, its latest effort to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas

  • SAMY MAGDY, BASSEM MROUE and DAVID RISING - Associated Press

Egypt has sent a high-level delegation to Israel with the hope of brokering a cease-fire agreement with Hamas in Gaza. At the same time, Egypt warned that a possible Israeli offensive focused on the southern city of Rafah on the border with Egypt could have catastrophic consequences to regional stability. As the war drags on and casualties mount, there is growing international pressure for Hamas and Israel to reach an agreement on a cease fire. Friday’s cease-fire talks were to focus on a limited exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners, and the return of a significant number of displaced Palestinians to northern Gaza.

Takeaways from AP's investigation into fatal police encounters involving injections of sedatives

  • By RYAN J. FOLEY, CARLA K. JOHNSON and SHELBY LUM - Associated Press

An investigation led by The Associated Press has found that the practice of giving sedatives to people detained by police has spread quietly across the nation over the last 15 years, built on questionable science and backed by police-aligned experts. The injections are given by medical personnel during police encounters. The investigation shows how a strategy intended to reduce violence and save lives has resulted in some avoidable deaths. While sedatives were mentioned as a cause or contributing factor in a dozen official death rulings, authorities often didn’t even investigate whether injections were appropriate in the 94 deaths identified by the AP over a decade. About half of the 94 who died were Black.
