Thanks to the success of the first film, the sequel was greenlit shortly after its release and confirmed in 2020.
Meg 2: The Trench plot
Meg 2 is based on the novel The Trench by Steve Allen which continues the adventures of Jonas, a paleobiologist who had to defeat a megalodon.
In the book, he discovers another prehistoric monster called a Kronosaurus which was thought extinct which he must battle and defeat.
Meg 2: The Trench reviews
The reviews for Meg 2: The Trench are in, and the sequel hasn't caused quite as big of a splash as its director Ben Wheatley or star Statham might have hoped.
Digital Spy's write-up claimed that the movie needs "to focus more on the sharks and less on the humans," while Variety had harsher words for its clunky screenplay, saying: "If you want to know what a movie would sound like were it written entirely by AI, look no further than The Meg 2." Ouch.
Statham returns as hero Jonas Taylor in a role that makes use of his diving background and is one of the four movies he has coming out this year along with Operation Fortune, Fast X and The Expendables 4.
Also returning from the first film is Cliff Curtis (who also starred alongside Statham in Hobbs and Shaw), and Page Kennedy while Li Bingbing who played a female oceanographer is not rejoining the rest of the cast.
The biggest addition to the movie is Wu Jing, the highest grossing actor of all time in China. The action hero is best known for his performances in the Wolf Warrior movies and a string of recent hits including The Battle at Lake Changjin, The Battle at Lake Changjin II and The Wandering Earth 2 which are among the highest grossing films of all time.
Resident Evil and Luther actor Sienna Guillory has also joined the cast, playing the director of an oceanographic institute.
Meg 2: The Trench director
While National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub was behind the camera on the first film, he has been replaced by Britain's own Ben Wheatley for the sequel.
Wheatley is best known for his low budget genre movies such as Sightseers and Kill List but also directed the Rebecca remake for Netflix and the action film Free Fire.
Meg 2: The Trench trailer
The official trailer for Meg 2 was released on Monday, 8 May and it gave fans their first look at the next chapter in the franchise, including the deadliest megalodon yet.
From the looks of the teaser clip, Jonas Taylor and his team will have a difficult job on their hand trying to contain not one but multiple megalodons, which have resurfaced from deep within the ocean and are now a threat to all of mankind.
So, just to recap, Montes, the mercenaries, and their financer were killed by the megalodons or the mini-Megs. One megalodon is blown to pieces by Jonas with explosive harpoons. The second megalodon dies after being impaled by a helicopter blade. Plus, the giant octopus gets ripped apart by Haiqi.
My Rating: PG-13 for intense action violence including bloody images, frightening scenes, brief strong language, and some sexual jokes. 2 people found this helpful.
It is no surprise there is little scientific accuracy in the film, beyond the fact that megalodon is alive and well. Perhaps most bizarrely, the deep trench is now inhabited by a species of what was once an air-breathing reptile.
PETERSCHMIDT: That extinct shark is a megalodon, the meg in question. Totally real shark. It was the largest shark that ever swam the ocean. It was about 60 feet long and lived around 2.5 million years ago.
Jonas manages to wound the beast with his submersible and stabs it in the eye; its blood attracts a shiver of modern sharks that devour the dying meg. As Jonas reunites with the rest of the crew, a passing meg is heard, suggesting that more than two escaped the trench.
The movie hints at Haiqi being pregnant, suggesting that more Megalodons will pose a threat in the future, along with the possibility of other aquatic creatures.
MEG 2 also has gratuitous foul language (about 21 obscenities and profanities) and some scary human deaths and not-so-scary human deaths. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and sensitive adults.
This film has a lot more jumpscares than the first, that's the scariest part of it though. Jumpscares occur throughout and are loud and scary. In an extremely gruesome scene, the POV of people swallowed by a shark is shown. Its teeth are visible cutting through their bodies with blood leaking from them.
Being that this is Statham, I mean Jonas, his ability to pivot around death knows no bounds. "Meg 2" may feel fast-moving and, at times, ludicrous. In one scene, Jonas blows the "air out of his sinuses" to allow him to swim in the pressurized depths of the ocean without a suit or oxygen of any kind... And it works!
Despite surviving the oceanic horror of The Meg, Li Bingbing's character sits out the events of The Meg 2. However, her young daughter Meiying (Sophia Cai), one of the few characters to see the Meg up close and live to tell about it, does come back for the second movie.
Researchers studying sharks in the northwest Atlantic Ocean were shocked after they detected what appeared to be a massive 50-foot “megalodon” on sea scanners below their boat.
Megalodons, back when they were still around (about 20 - 3 million years ago) lived close to the surface like modern great white sharks. The sheer pressure from the Mariana Trench would crush a Megalodon to death.
There is sustained action-violence throughout Meg 2: The Trench, including many fights amongst people with guns, machine guns, explosions, knives, and harpoons. Several characters are killed and/or eaten by Megalodons. Blood is often seen.
Male Meg 2 is killed at the end, again by Jonas, when he impales it through the brain with a blade from Hillary Driscoll's downed helicopter. The sqoctopus is killed in a fight with Haiqi. The lone shark survivor is indeed Haiqi, found as a baby and brought up by Jiuming in his marine research centre.
'No. It's definitely not alive in the deep oceans, despite what the Discovery Channel has said in the past,' notes Emma. 'If an animal as big as megalodon still lived in the oceans we would know about it. '
DJ, Mac, and Mana One analyst Jess discover that the rescue pod has been sabotaged, forcing the crew to use exosuits to walk toward Montes' station, with only four of them surviving the journey. Jess reveals herself as a traitor and attempts to remotely kill the four, but they escape in a submersible.
But Suyin died sometime in 2021. Although the exact cause of her death was never stated, it is possible that; she had died from illness or perhaps one of her dives had gone wrong. After her passing, Jonas and her brother, Jiuming assume custody of Meiying, looking after her in Suyin's absence.
